Pastor’s Bookshelf - Welcome to my bookshelf!

Each month I will discuss a recent book that I’ve finished.

This month I’d like to talk about

Finding God’s Life For My Will

By Mike Donehey

Mike Donehey is probably best known as the lead singer for a Christian music group called Tenth Avenue North. I had heard of them, but didn’t know their music very well (I think my wife had listened to them more than I did), but then years ago we went and saw them on the free night at Unityfest up in Muskegon. Not only was the music incredible, but his testimony and the things he shared about his spiritual journey were so compelling. I became a huge fan - and started listening to their stuff a LOT more regularly.

So when this book came out, his first ever, I was eager to dive into it. Mike has a talent for taking brilliant theological insights and making them very accessible. He takes teachings of some very respected scholars - and helps make them understandable for the rest of us. I’ve actually used chapters of this book in my own messages.A lot of people spend a lot of time stressing and worrying about God’s will for our lives - but Mike flips all that on its head. Rather than God being the one handing out the plan, Mike asks and answers the question - what if God IS the plan? Getting to know and trust and love God is actually the GOAL.

Donehey explores these themes while telling big parts of his own personal journey - which is quite a ride. From car accidents to broken dreams, then onto new dreams and all the twists and turns that come with it. While he still makes music on occasion, Mike Donehey has shifted gears and is doing a lot more teaching and writing these days. This book was fun, an easy read - and made me excited to pick up his NEXT book.
